My journey with therapy has been a long one. I took a break after university and went into alternative education settings working with children for whom mainstream education didn't fit, who had SEND and emotional and behavioural issues, and then with Young Carers. These roles were challenging but, my gosh, were they rewarding! They also reminded me how crucial therapy is, reigniting my passion as a therapist, so I returned to my therapeutic background.
Since then, I have worked with children, their families, and adults in various settings, gaining extensive experience in different areas. These encompass anxiety, depression, grief and loss, sexual abuse, self-harm, bullying, low self-esteem, gender and identity. I take pride in providing support as a Trans ally.
My work means a great deal to me, and I also live with a chronic condition which I manage with a lot of self-care. When I'm not working I recharge by spending time with my cat, Hobbs and dog, Rita (you might see them on screen from time to time), curling up with a book, or a film, I also like to be creative at times and doodle or bake - I'm not sure I'm Bake Off standard yet, I'm still perfecting my banana loaf!
Plants also bring me a sense of calm and grounding but my home is running out of space for them!
I had the opportunity to study for a postgraduate diploma specialising in working with children with learning disabilities and autism. Since then, I have furthered my knowledge of working with autistic and neurodiverse adults through training, reading and listening to lived experiences.
Over the last 4 years, I have supported families with autistic and SEND children, adults and young people, gaining insights and experiences that have broadened my knowledge and compassion in this area. I have an understanding of some of the challenges that being Neurodiverse brings and the challenges families can face in supporting their disabled or/and Neurodiverse child.
I now predominantly work with adults but also work with children and young people aged 11 and above offering a space of compassion, empathy and support.
Creating an inclusive and supportive environment is something I feel strongly about, and wish for all my clients to feel comfortable being themselves. Clients are encouraged to stim openly if they feel safe to do so.
We are all individual and unique, and the way I approach and work with a client is specific to their own experiences and needs. There is no ‘one size fits all’ to my counselling practice.
