What is counselling and is it right for me?

We all wish to feel happy, and free of stress in our lives. However, at some point we may experience times when we do not feel this way; instead, we feel lost, stuck, stressed or overwhelmed.  Sometimes we don’t know why we feel the way we do. Sometimes it's due to specific life events such as bereavement, relationship breakdown, redundancy, retirement, family issues, anxiety, depression or the demands of caring for a family or loved one.  
At this point we may benefit from having someone to talk to; someone who is outside of the issues, who is objective; and someone we don’t have to worry about upsetting. Someone to whom we can speak honestly without fear of judgment or criticism, who isn’t waiting for an opportunity to tell us about their problems -  a counsellor or therapist. 

Counselling is essentially a space where you feel truly listened to and understood, a space where you can have those conversations that allow you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your situation enabling you to grow and move forward in a way that brings you contentment in the long run. 

Taking the first steps in getting help and support when feeling like this, whether it be looking for a counsellor, picking up the phone or walking into the counselling room for the first time can be daunting, I know, I've been there and I never underestimate how much courage that takes.
It is the first step in regaining control of your life.
